Learning about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also called ADHD or ADD, is a disorder that is normally diagnosed for the first time when the sufferer is a child. There are times, however, when someone does not discover that they have one of these disorders until they are in their late twenties or early thirties! Help for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will work well at any age.

Concentration is difficult with ADHD/ADD

There are experts on these disorders who disagree with each other about the exact symptoms of ADD and ADHD, as experts will. But, they do agree that people who suffer from ADHD not only need help for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but usually have trouble with concentrating on one thing for any period of time. They also firmly agree that those with this disorder also have periodic bouts of very impulsive behaviour.

How does someone with ADHD/ADD behave?

The real cause of ADHD has not been discovered as of yet, but you cannot help but notice the behaviours of someone who has this disorder. Not only do they have visible trouble concentrating and are prone to impulsive actions, but are also disorganised and hyperactive most of the time. These people cannot sit still or for that matter, stand still, but fidget and squirm relentlessly. However, when someone has no other symptoms except an inability to concentrate, they are normally said to have ADD instead of ADHD. The same kind of help for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder does a fine job at getting these people on the right track.

Schools and ADHD/ADD

Parents may or may not notice that their child has symptoms of this disorder at a young age. If the tell-tale behaviours at home do not clue them in, the child will definitely be diagnosed when they start to school. Teachers are taught certain things to watch out for in their classes, and when a child begins to disrupt his class and act out, often the school will contact the parents and ask that the child be tested for ADHD/ADD. It is possible that school districts will have special classes or programs for these children and their parents as well. There are also several things that parents can do at home for their child that can help to improve the way your child behaves, and also the way his thought processes work. Help for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is never ignored by the school system.

Improvement starts at home

Believe it or not, the treatment and help for attention deficit disorder starts at home with the parents. What can you do, you may ask? For starters, have a schedule in place for each day that is highly structured so that your child knows what to expect. Be consistent and firm with any requests made of the child, as this helps the child to know what the boundaries are, and can help to control daily behaviour.

Nutrition can play a key role in ADHD/ADD

You would also be a little surprised at how much of a difference nutrition can make when you are working with someone who has ADHD/ADD. When the child does not eat any artificial colours and flavourings, no caffeine, and no refined sugar, it can make a help with attention deficit hyperactive disorder and make a great deal of difference in their activity levels and overall behaviour. It is a good idea to take these items out of your child's diet before you have your first appointment with one of our practitioners.

Will NLP and hypnosis really help me or my loved one?

Raising a child can be even more difficult and challenging when you also have ADHD/ADD to contend with. This is why we are proud to offer NLP and hypnosis for both adults and children so that parents are able to get involved in the treatment and learn more about the best ways to deal with a child who has this disorder. There are two excellent books for parents of very young children that we highly recommend, both written by Dr. Christopher Green. Their titles are Toddler Taming and Beyond Toddlerdom. Many people have found them very helpful.

How does NLP and hypnosis help with ADHD/ADD?

Simply stated, we approach this disorder not as a learning difficulty, but as a teaching difficulty. We can teach new behaviours while we “erase” the old ones. Everyone has something that they are able to concentrate on with all of their attention, and finding this really helps. Once we know what it is, we can transfer that skill of concentration to other tasks. NLP deals with the conscious mind, and teaches skills and behaviours on a conscious level, while hypnosis tackles the subconscious mind, and replaces hyperactive/poor attention behaviours with those that are the complete opposite ...

How long will this treatment take?

If the family is able to give the child a structured environment at home, and also change the diet and nutrition, our treatments will work fairly quickly, often in just two or three sessions of an hour each.
